เรายังไม่เคยคุยกับนักเรียนในสาขานี้มาก่อน ครั้งนี้เราคงจะได้ทราบอะไรใหม่ๆ กันครับ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ผมอยากให้แปลกไปกว่าทุกการสัมภาษณ์ที่ผ่านมา เพราะเรี่องภาษาอังกฤษนี้ คือปัญหาหลักของนักเรียนทุนแทบทุกราย ก็ขอหยิบนักเรียนทุนที่เรียนด้านภาษาโดยเฉพาะ แถมด้วยการให้เพื่อนรายนี้ตอบคำถามเราเป็นภาษาอังกฤษอีกต่างหาก เพื่อนๆ ก็จะได้เห็นสำนวน

สวัสดีครับ ความจริงพลังโชคมาศึกษาตั้งแต่ระดับปริญญาโทแล้ว ขอให้เล่าเรื่องการศึกษาให้เพื่อนๆ ฟังเริ่มตั้งแต่แรกจนถึงปัจจุบัน ในสาขานี้ครับ

I have got a BEd in Elementary Education from Thailand.  Then, I had taught at a primary school for about two years before I realized that teaching primary school students was not exactly what I was looking for, though I enjoyed teaching English.  Afterwards, I went to King Mongkut’s University of Technology of Thonburi or known as “Bangmod’ for my Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics.   After finishing the MA, I had taught there for almost eight months before going to Georgia State University (GSU) for a second MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).  The only reason I chose this area is that, as mentioned above, I like teaching English and studying the features of English language that are useful for pedagogical purposes.  I spent about one year and eight months at GSU before I went to the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee Campus for a PhD in Linguistics and TESOL.  This is my second year there which I enjoy so far.

ศึกษาที่ Wisconsin แล้วทำไมตัวถึงอยู่ที่ Chicago ครับ (มีผลกับค่าครองชีพด้วยหรือเปล่าเนี่ย ถ้าผมนึกภาพเองคงคาดว่าอยู่ระหว่าง border line between state)

Yes, I live in Chicago, the city that is only one hour fifteen minutes drive to Milwaukee or sixty miles away.  Fortunately, I have to go to school only two days a week which is not bad at all.  There are many students who commute from Chicago to Milwaukee like me.  Of course, I always get Milwaukee rate, though I live in Chicago.  The monthly expenses I always receive are enough, but I have to be a bit frugal. 

คำถามนี้อาจจะเป็นประโยชน์ และความรู้ใหม่ให้เพื่อนๆ ด้วย.....ก่อนที่พลังโชคจะมาอยู่ศึกษาป.เอกในที่ปัจจุบันนี้ ได้ Hop มาหลายแห่ง อย่างเช่น U. of Minnesota, U. of Pittsburgh จนมาลงตัวที่นี่ แถมยังมีติ่ง ขอโดดไปลงวิชาที่ Penn. State U. มาอีกด้วย (ถึงแม้จะไม่ได้ลงเพราะขอยกเลิก) เกิดอะไรขึ้นครับ มีปัญหาอะไร มีเหตุผลอะไรที่ทำให้ต้องย้ายแทบจะทุกเทอม

Let me clarify this first.  Before I first came to the US, I knew nothing about it.  Then I decided to go to Illinois State University (ISU) for one semester.  I was requested to take Literature classes which are not my goal.  My goal is to take classes related to Language Teaching and Linguistics.  After spending one semester at ISU, I moved to Georgia State University (GSU), where I transferred all my credits to.  At GSU, I focused exclusively on TESOL which is my area.  Yes, I applied to and was accepted by the University of Minnesota for a PhD in Linguistics; however, I didn’t go!  I decided to go to the University of Pittsburgh instead for a PhD in Foreign Language Education.  I like the University of Pittsburgh, where professors were great and where I met many nice Thai friends.  Being there for a semester, I found that the city of Pittsburgh might not fit my lifestyle well.  I then moved to Wisconsin- Milwaukee Campus, but I stay in Chicago.  The way I think is different from what many students do because I always value many criteria when I come to choose a school.  When I first come to the US, many people in Thailand expect me to know my area, language, and American culture.  I just want to be somewhere that I can learn American ways of life, American culture, and American English which I think are very important, but many students, clearly, overlook.  It is always hard to pursue any PhD, no matter where you go, and you have to try hard, but what else can you learn outside school and what else do the people in Thailand expect you to know as US a degree holder.

Yes, I had taught English to engineering students at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi for eight months.  I always miss teaching my students and my career as a language teacher.  I feel very happy to help my students know English and use English as it is known that English is very important.

เพื่อนนักเรียนทุนของเรามีอยู่มากที่ U. of Wisconsin แต่เป็นที่ Madison campus อยากทราบว่าที่ Milwaukee campus นี้ ห่างกันขนาดไหน มีเพื่อนๆ นักเรียนไทยเรามากไหมครับ

Madison is about 70 miles away.  Madison is the main campus where there are many Thai students.  I have been there only twice.  The campus is very beautifully located on the lakes, while Milwaukee Campus is on Lake Michigan.  At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Campus, there are about 20 Thai students.  Most of them are doing graduate degrees in Business Administration, and Engineering. 

วกกลับมาเรื่องภาษาอังกฤษที่พลังโชคศึกษาอย่างจริงจัง และเจาะลึกกว่าเพื่อนๆ ที่ส่วนใหญ่จะมาศึกษาทางสายวิทย์ฯ นั้น  มีอะไรสนุก งดงาม หรือเป็นศิลป์ ของภาษาอังกฤษ ที่พอจะเล่าให้เราฟังกันบ้างครับ

I haven’t got a Bachelor Degree in English, but Education.  However, I like English as it makes me understood by people I meet.  Last year, I went to Montreal, Canada, where local people speak French.  I can’t speak French, so I know how difficult it is to be somewhere I don’t understand them and where they don’t understand me either.  So I think it is always beneficial to know a language besides a mother tongue.  If you know English well enough to communicate, you will find that social and academic life is much easier: you can travel by yourself; you can discuss in the class well and express yourself clearly in an appropriate way; and gain knowledge more effectively.  I just want to remind Thai students that language including English can be basically divided into a ‘written language’ or the language we read from textbooks and printings and hear from news.  The second one is called a ‘spoken language’; it is a language we actually use in our daily lives, in restaurants, at department stores, on a street.  A spoken language and written language can be practiced differently with different sources and assistance.  It is funny if we use a very formal, written language with our friends and if we talk like what we read in a textbook.  The best way to practice speaking English is to interact with native speakers of English, talk with them as much as you can, for example, on a bus, on a way to school, at a bus stop, etc.  Listening to news and movies can also be helpful. 

อเมริกาเป็นประเทศที่มีชนชาติหลากหลาย การพูดภาษาอังกฤษจึงทำให้มีสำเนียงแตกต่างมากมายด้วย มีเทคนิคอย่างไรที่จะบอกสำเนียงภาษาอังกฤษของชนที่มาจากที่ต่างถิ่นกันครับ

I used to live in Atlanta, Georgia for about two years.  Georgia is a southern state where people always make a drawl.  Southern accent may be hard to understand compared to English spoken in Midwest and West Coast.  Intonation and word usage can indicate the regional varieties of it speakers.  Although there are many varieties in the US, those that are usually mentioned are English spoken in Boston, in New York, in Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, etc), in the southern region (SC, NC, GA, AL, MS, etc.), in Southwest (TX, OK), and on the East Coast (CA).  I just want to emphasize that it is OK for us as non native speakers to pick up any accent as long as we can speak clearly and fluently.  Basically, an accent is a language.  If you can pick up and use one English accent effectively, it means you speak English.

ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นปัญหาหลักสำหรับเด็กไทย แม้แต่เพื่อนๆ นักเรียนทุนเอง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งที่มาเริ่มเรียนป.โท-เอก จะต้องถูกทดสอบภาษาก่อน และส่วนใหญ่ก็จะถูกบังคับหรือแนะนำให้เรียนภาษาควบคู่ไปด้วย ถึงแม้จะได้รับเข้าโปรแกรมแล้วก็ตาม  พลังโชคมีความคิดอย่างไรกับเรื่องนี้  มีคำแนะนำอะไรที่จะทำให้เพื่อนๆ ได้ปรับปรุง ได้พัฒนาภาษา ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว

I think I have mentioned above.  What I want to add is ‘do not learn by memorization’.  Learning language means you learn how to actually use it, not learn seriously about grammar rule.  If you ever notice, many native speakers of English sometimes use bad grammar.  Besides, what we speak is very grammatical, but it may not be actually used by it native speakers in their real lives.  So, if you want to speak well, you have to speak with and listen to native speakers of English.  Interacting with them as much as you can is very helpful.  When you speak English you will see the gap between what you want to say and what you can’t say, you can test your knowledge of English you already know, and you can put everything you have learned so far in a meaningful and understandable way.

In the same manner, if you want to write academically well, you first have to read and then write.  All of these are skills you need to practice (use) as much as you can.  Different fields have their own writing genre. I’d suggest that Thai students read more articles and textbooks published in their fields besides reading newspaper and magazines.

ตอนนี้เริ่มทำวิทยานิพนธ์/งานวิจัย หรือยัง ถ้ามีแล้วเกี่ยวกับเรื่องอะไร หัวข้อเรื่องอะไรครับ

I have thought about it.  So far I have focused exclusively on conversation analysis and classroom interaction.  I think of applying such theory to analyze the online chat among Thai learners.  It is just a thought!!  No plans have been further made!  I contacted many professors who I want to work with, but what they suggested that I read a lot the relevant literature. 

จากที่ได้มาศึกษาที่นี่ หากให้หวนกลับไปมองการสอนของตนในอดีตที่ผ่านมา พลังโชคได้อะไรใหม่ๆ หรือได้อะไรที่คิดว่าจะนำกลับไปใช้ ไปถ่ายทอด และปรับเปลี่ยนการสอนของตนในอดีต

What I have gained so far is the language (English) and language teaching techniques.  What I think is important is the research skills because, as you know, PhD level is about research skills and methods because PhD students have already learned about all theories and concepts once they are Master students.  When I return to my post in Thailand, all research skills and methods I have learned can be very useful because, at a university level, it is all about research.

คุยเรื่องหนักสมองกันมากแล้ว เอาเรื่องเบาๆ บ้างแล้วกัน ที่ Wisconsin มีอะไรน่าสนใจบ้างครับ เราชาวสนร.จะมาเยี่ยมเพื่อนๆ ในเร็วๆ นี้ด้วย มีอะไรแนะนำบ้างครับ

What we have in Wisconsin-Milwaukee is Lake Michigan and Museum of Fine Arts and History.  Milwaukee is known for cheese and beer.  I can’t think of anything else.

เรื่องอื่นทั่วไป อย่างการใช้ชีวิตในต่างแดน การปรับตัว การคบเพื่อน ภูมิอากาศ ค่าครองชีพ ฯลฯ มีอะไรที่เพื่อนๆ หรือน้องใหม่ที่คิดจะมาศึกษาในแถบนี้ ควรทราบบ้างครับ

Living in a western country may be difficult for some Thai students.  For me, independence, and effective time and financial management are my tips.  Planning ahead for everything can be helpful.  Do not study so hard that you miss something interesting in your life.  There are a lot of things out there waiting for you to explore!

For those who are new, I would just recommend that you make friends with the locals (Thai students and American neighbors), try to learn and understand the ways of life of people here.

โลกเปลี่ยนไปทุกวัน การแข่งขันก็สูงขึ้นไปเรื่อยๆ กว่าจะได้มาเป็นนักเรียนทุน ก็ต้องถูกคัดเลือกมาแล้ว ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการสอบแข่ง หรือการคัดเลือกบุคคลที่ตรงกับสาย/สาขาที่ขาดแคลน ฯลฯ 

การเลือกบุคคลมารับทุนนั้น ไม่ใช่เรื่องยาก กลับมีมากกว่าทุนที่จะมีให้ด้วยซ้ำ แต่สิ่งที่ยากนั้น ก็คือจะรู้ได้อย่างไรว่า บุคคลที่เราเลือกมานั้น เป็นคนดี เป็นคนที่จะกลับไปช่วยพัฒนาชาติเราได้อย่างคุ้มค่ากับที่รัฐบาลได้ลงทุน และคุ้มค่าที่เงินภาษีจากชาวไทยได้ถูกนำมาใช้ส่งเสริมการศึกษานักเรียนทุนอย่างพวกเรา พลังโชคมีความคิดเห็นอย่างไร กับเรื่องนี้ครับ

My mom always says that too, ‘we can learn in this country because of tax received from all Thais’.  What the government gives us is much more than what we will pay back to them in terms of tax.  I would say that we have to help our country as much as we can, so that one day, it becomes a developed country.  Just do our best!  I think of a word we usually hear, ‘ask not what the country can do for you - ask what you can do for the country’.
